After completing my undergraduate degree in Mass Communications at QUT, I broadened my horizons and moved abroad to London. Upon my return to Australia, I moved to Melbourne and completed a postgraduate Juris Doctor. Whilst studying, I began working full time as an Executive Assistant at MinterEllison in the Competition, Risk and Regulatory team. During my time as an EA, everyone I worked with was extremely supportive of my studies and championed me when I was successful in landing a role in the Melbourne clerkship program in 2021/2022. In 2023, after a fulfilling stint as a clerk, I returned to Brisbane as a graduate, with continued unwavering support from MinterEllison. My journey with the firm so far has been extremely rewarding and I feel very lucky to work in such a supportive environment. I look forward to many more years of growth ahead.
The firms’ pre-eminent industry reputation was always something that I aspired to be a part of. However, it was the positive word of mouth stories from people that had worked for the firm that originally sparked my interest to apply.
The clerkship process was very rewarding. If you have the opportunity to apply, definitely do so. My advice would be to make sure you embrace the program as much possible. While you’re there to learn about your possible career path, also make sure to take opportunities to connect with as many people as you can (don’t be shy to ask questions). Demonstrating an eagerness to engage and learn is crucial, but stay true to yourself - Minters genuinely encourages everyone to remain confident in their own unique skills and experiences.
As a clerk, I rotated through the Workplace and Construction teams. As a graduate, my first rotation was within the Competition, Risk and Regulatory team and my second rotation has been within Real Estate. Throughout my rotations, I have been fortunate to be exposed to a wide range of matters, both transactional and litigious, and work alongside lawyers with extensive expertise in each subject area. Each rotation provides an opportunity to develop a different skill set and network with people across the firm. I feel very lucky to have had the chance to rotate through
different teams and believe it has been an invaluable foundation for my career as a lawyer.
Your first year as a lawyer is filled with a range of responsibilities, such as managing full-time work, completing practical legal training (PLT), and preparing for admission. While these can be challenging at times, the firm comprehends these complexities and designed the graduate program to assist first year lawyers in navigating it all. Alongside these practical aspects, the firm also schedules regular check-ins with graduates and promotes plenty of discussions about your rotations and overall career trajectory.
The standout highlight of my experience at work so far is undoubtedly the people I work with and have met along the way. As an example, it has been fantastic to be a part of a graduate cohort which has been an in-built support system from day one.
